Spring Branch ISD Magnet Schools
According to SBISD, more than 180,000 residents living in approximately a 44 square mile area in the Memorial/ Spring Branch neighborhoods of Houston and 6 incorporated villages send students to its district. The incorporated villages are Bunker Hill, Hedwig, Hilshire, Hunters Creek, Piney Point, and Spring Valley. These students attend 26 elementary schools, 7 regular middle schools, 3 charter middle schools, 4 traditional high schools, and 1 alternative high school.
Currently, we only profile "dedicated magnet" schools in Spring Branch:
Cornerstone Academy (CSA) is a Title I charter school in Spring Branch ISD serving grades 6-8. CSA was first imagined in 1997 during a meeting of the SBISD Board of Trustees, who then approved a steering committee to create a school that “embodied choice, commitment, community, and collaboration” while relieving overcrowding. It is ranked in the top .5% of Texas middle schools, has received exemplary ratings each year, and in 2008 received the award “National Charter School of the Year.”
A Spring Branch ISD application-based charter school, Westchester Academy for International Studies originally opened in 1967 as Westchester High School to accommodate a surge in enrollment for Memorial High School. Westchester opened with eighteen hundred students and grew to four thousand in seven years, prompting the opening of Stratford High School near Westchester. In 1985, Westchester High School was closed and its students transferred to Stratford and Memorial due to a decrease in enrollment. Westchester is currently developing a certified Middle Years IB Program.
